hayward. police say an officer with a civilian in the car stopped to check out a parked car on fletcher lane in hayward. the driver tried to speed way, hitting an open door of the parole car. the officer opened fire, hitting and killing a passenger in the suspect car. police say the officer feared for his life. and the life of the civilian. it'sunfortunate. if people would comply, it's been my experience if they comply you don't end up in the situation. >> early saturday morning officers shot a man who allegedly had a gun. and several hours later police killed another man with a gun. the mystery surrounding a teddy bear with a purple heart medal left for the police officers killed last week has been solved. our sister station captured the image of the man leaving the purple heart. he left it and didn't say

anything. a deputy got a letter from the man saying in part the bear reflects the love of community, the red ribbon for the bloodshed in the line of duty and the purple heart for the sacrifice above and beyond all duty. the police department says it was deeply moved by the offering. a man has been arrested for stealing flowers from that memorial. police say ken msffei swipes a floral display and took off in a cab. after officers caught up with it maffei said he purchased the flowers but couldn't produce a receipt. a public memorial service for already yen butch baker and elizabeth butler will be held thursday at hp pavilion in downtown san jose. you can watch the service live on kpix 5. the man police believe is responsible for a deadly shooting and crash on the vegas strip will be in court today in

los angeles. it's an etradi' tion -- that shooting caused a chain reaction crash that killed two people in a taxi. san francisco police are searching for an assault rifle stolen from an unmarked police car. the ar15 gun was in the the car on mission street when someone broke the window and grabbed it saturday night. that type of gun is given to specially trained officers. san francisco police have sent out an alert to other agencies to try and find the weapon. a woman with a rifle and a hatchet held san francisco police off for more than two hours yesterday. it it started when residents of lion street home walked in on a burglary. s.w.a.t officers talked to the 22-year-old suspect into dropping the weapons and surrendering. she is facing burglary charges. san francisco police are searching for a missing man who

has the mental capacity of a teenager. dewin was seen friday on his home near sickles avenue. that's on mission street. 5 feet 1, 90 pounds, black hair and brown icy. he functions as a 12 to 14-year- old and can be easily confused. tragedy at escape from alcatraz this weekend. a 46-year-old man from austin texas died from the race. this is youtube video of the swim portion. the man had a massive heart attack in the bay. the fire department pulled him out of the 55-degree water, tried to e revive him, but they just couldn't. this is the first death at the event since it started back in 1981. a former high school coach will be sentenced today for having a sexual relationship with 17-year-old girl. that-year-old joshua totro carried on the relationship while he was the water polo and switch coach in aragon high

well, as if getting to a giants game isn't pricey enough, the city of san francisco is going to charge extra for metering parking spaces at the ballpark. and cate cauguiran has more about the price hike. i didn't think it could get anymore expensive. >> reporter: just when you think it can't, it always does. they're calling this event metering rates so if you parked near at&t park starting today, it will cost you. the idea behind the new changes is it will manage increased parking and traffic demand and transit leaders say too many drivers circle this area slowing down muni buses and causing con congestion. this is how much you can expect to pay. normally it will be 25-cent ares per hour, but during games and events, rates will jump to 5 to $7 an hour, depending how

to the golden gate bridge along southbound 101. elsewhere, there is road work eastbound 580 at greenville. we're seeing lots of yellow on the sensors. speeds dipping under 40 miles per hour. this road work is going to be there at least until 11. it's blocking three left lanes now, westbound we're starting to to see delays for the morning commute. that 20 minute riding to go westbound 580. altamont pass and 680. westbound highway 4 holding steady. slight delays on the eastbound side and. walnut creek, 680 and 24 showing no delays and. everything is in the green, no delays on 80. 880 looking good. we have early morning road work north 880 near the coliseum. looks like they have that wrapped up quickly so traffic is clear. three left lanes closed until 6:00 a.m. and slight delays there that

illness. she resists it. the fact that she's been taken to hospital suggests something important. the last time the queen was hospitalized was back in 2003 when she had knee surgery. catholic cardinals are starting the process of selecting a replacement for the retired pope benedict xvi. they are gathered at the vatican getting to know each other and discussing when to start the conclave, the secret voting procedure to select a new pope. >> we have to have someone who's willing to govern administratively to see to it that the administration is better ordered. not that he has to do it himself. >> the cardinals will discuss problems within the church including finances and sex abuse scandals. the conclave comes as the former cardinal from scotland is apologizing for his sexual conduct. keith o'brien released a

than 7 hours investigating a shooting that left a teenager dead. the shooting happened last night just before 10:30 and they've identified the victim as 18-year-old richard vega. he's from campbell and was shot last night on wrest vladimir avenue. he was then taken to a hospital for emergency surgery but died from his injuries. at this point police have made no arrests. they do say that a dark colored cedar was seen leaving the area but officials have not released a description of a suspect. this is the first homicide in campbell since 2007 and neighbors i spoke to this morning very surprised to learn of the crime. >> it happens somewhere else, you know, but when it happens right on your doorstep, it is shocking. >> reporter: and that same neighbor told me that there have been some car break-ins around here. but those are the only crimes he's been aware of recently.

now, this neighborhood where the shooting happened is surrounded by apartments and duplexes and part of west vladimir avenue was closed while police investigated but at this point it is back open to traffic. elissa harrington kpix 5. it's not clear whether the shooting was gang related but police say they are investigating all possibilities. police were involved in several deadty shootings around the bay area this weekend. four people were killed by officer gunfire. three times on saturday and again early sunday morning. that is where are hay ward police say an officer with a civilian ride along stopped to check out a parked car on fletcher lain. the driver sped away, the officer opened fire in defense of the civilian's life and his own. the driver was captured but his passenger was already dead. >> it's unfortunate, if people would comply, it's been my experience that when they comply, you don't end up in

parking around san francisco's at&t park. cate cauguiran is live this morning at the ballpark with more on how much it will cost you to park there, especially during baseball season. good morning kate. good morning. keep those quarters handy, the idea behind the changes is to keep up with increased parking demand and cut down on circling in the area. we want to let you know these changes will take effect tonight. meters on blocks within walking distance of at&t park will go until 10:00 p.m. on weeknights. the new changes will free up spots in south beach and mission bay. here are the new rates, during nonevent nights, rates at sf mta meters, will be 25-cents an hour. and during games, 5 to $7 an hour. all the new rates will apply after 6:00 p.m. the first test of these new changes will be march 17th. that's when we can see the

moments for passengers on a bus in poland when the driver passes out. two women grab the wheel as the bus rolls out of control. they couldn't reach the pedals because the driver was in the way. the buzukia renned into several -- the bus careened into several cars and the driver came through and stopped the bus. amazingly no one was hurt. republicans and democrats say they both want to find a way to compromise and roll back budget cuts that kicked in friday. president obama spent the weekend calling lawmakers trying to convince them to keep working to find alternates to the $85 billion in cuts. top republicans are down plays cuts. house speaker john boehner says he isn't sure it will hurt the economy. republicans are insisting on new no taxes. meanwhile the president is expected to announce his nominee for budget chief today. a senior administration official says it's sylvia

year-old richard vega. he's from campbell and was shot last night at around 10:20. he was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery but died from his injuries shortly after midnight. this is the first homicide in campbell since 2007. this is very unusual here. i got a chance to speak with a neighbor who says he's lived here 20 years and the only trouble he's encountered until now is car break-ins and the news of the shooting is surprising. >> usually it's happening somewhere else. when happens right on your doorstep, it is shocking. >> reporter: investigators did have west ladimer closed for most of the morning and have since reopened it. in campbell, elissa harrington kpix 5. >> do police know anything about the suspect. >> reporter: at this point they do not have a suspect description but at least one witness did report seeing a dark sedan leaving the area heading eastbound
